Okay, so I had this little email back and forth going with some guys and I made a comment about participating in some truly deep geeking, F&SF discussions, and ended with "Let the Elder Geeking begin." And had an epiphany. I could blog (God, I hate that word, but there it is) about F&SF from the point of view of a, shall we say, more mature aficionado.
Now, I'm not claiming ancient wisdom or anything like that (well, not much, anyway) and I'm sure not among the oldest fans who can still put words together in some semblance of rational thought (heck, there are a few members of First Fandom still hanging on to this mortal coil) but I'm old enough to have a somewhat different view of the current state of the art, particularly in terms of media.
So, how old is old enough? Well, I was a senior in high school during Star Trek (TOS) first run. I was more or less grown up when Star Wars hit the theaters and old enough to fall asleep in the theater, trying to watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Old enough that I was too old (or too busy with work and things) to experience things like The Transformers, or Speed Racer with the requisite degree of enthusiasm.
This blog (arrgh) is going to be my more or less random thoughts about growing up as an undercover geek in the 50s and 60s, and how that colors my views on the current explosion of media F&SF. I may even talk about some literary F&SF, but we'll have to see on that. Between work and, well, more work, and TV, I seem to have less and less time to read. And when I do, I find myself re-reading old favorites. Yeah, that old.
